THE AMF CREW - JUNE 2017
Believe it or not, in the heart of the nascent counter-culture movement of 1971, A Moveable Feast first opened its doors at the corner of Westheimer and Montrose. In those days, the health food movement and a Rodale-inspired organic lifestyle were totally alien to Houston's fried food, bar-b-que, and big steak lifestyle. Granola was hippie food, and vegetarianism was downright un-Texan.
There is no place in Houston that can compare to A Moveable Feast, part health food store and part café. There is a friendly vibe that is immediately noticeable when you walk through the front doors. Patrons often comment on the positive “energy” of this community meeting place. Customers are always seeing their friends, neighbors, and meeting long time acquaintances here. It's a great spot to have a business meeting, or a place where the family can have dinner and actually hear each other talk! Dining alfresco on the patio is very calming watching the butterflies flit around the “jungle” alongside it.
A Moveable Feast has always offered Houstonians an alternative to over-processed, additive-packed, preservative soaked foods. We have resourced local food sources for years, way before local became the “it” word for foodies, and have always featured menu and grocery items for those sensitive to dairy and wheat. Many items in the kitchen are organic, and most everything is made fresh each day. We have a number of customers that eat here daily, and they say that their digestive system just can't handle food elsewhere. That says a lot about our kitchen.
A Moveable Feast is more than just a restaurant, as the store shelves are packed with top quality nutritional supplements, skin care products, essential oils, gluten-free groceries, local honey, beeswax candles, incense, and much more. In the coolers are jars of artisan miso, yogurt, sauerkraut, bottles of kombucha, and drinks of all sorts. The freezer is stocked full of local, pastured meats, bone broth, and other healthy frozen options. We have a very knowledgeable staff that frequently attends manufacturer trainings so they can be up-to-date on the latest information. The impressive herb wall is truly unique with nearly 400 bulk herbs and teas. There is no place in Texas that has an herb wall like this.
Stop by and visit us, you won't be disappointed. Remember we are closed on Sundays, but open 9am - 9pm Monday through Saturday.
"If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life, it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast.” - Ernest Hemingway, A Moveable Feast
